Lens Tints for Your Lifestyle

Gold Tinted LensesDid you know that there are many different lens tint colors you can choose when purchasing a pair of glasses or sunglasses?  Choosing the right tint can improve your vision in the conditions where you spend the most time.  Here are some of the most popular colors and the settings in which they work the best:

Browns & Ambers

Brown and amber tinted lenses are popular choices because they improve contrast and are easy to look through if it’s sunny or overcast.  Most browns contain a bit of red which enhances depth perception.

Browns block high amounts of blue light which helps heighten your visual acuity.  In other words, you can see contrast better.  For example, for a golfer, this helps him distinguish far off green grass against the blue skies.

In addition to sports where you may need to judge distance, brown tones are great for high-altitude sports, fishing, hunting, or sailing.

Grays

Gray is popular shade for general purpose use because it doesn’t mess with your ability to see colors as they really are.  Gray tones reduce eye fatigue and glare while they protect your eyes from the brightness of the sun.

Gray tinted lenses are recommended for driving.  You may also choose them if you play baseball, football, do a lot of water sports, or generally spend a lot of time outdoors.  Like browns, gray tints are good for very sunny or even partly cloudy days.

Yellow & Orange

Yellow and orange tints provide great clarity in foggy, hazy, or other low-light conditions.  These colors filter out the blue light that makes focusing difficult.  But, be aware these colors also cause true colors to be somewhat distorted.

Yellows are recommended for outdoor activities that take place at first or last light.  So, if you are an early morning hunter or if you get that bike ride in at dusk, you may consider this tint.  Some pilots also prefer it.

Blues & Purples

These colors are mostly used for fashion or cosmetic purposes, but they do reduce the glare and help you see contours better while improving your perception of other colors.

Reds & Pinks

Red and pink tones actually improve your depth perception and reduce eye strain.  These colors are great for driving, cycling, or racing because they provide good road visibility and are comforting to wear for a long period of time.  Some skiers prefer this color tint to reduce glare.
