Want to be Taken More Seriously? Get Glasses

Think about your favorite courtroom drama for a moment.  The story has gone along for almost the full hour.  The bad guy is on the stand and the sharp, female, prosecuting attorney paces the floor as she fires out her questions.  She pushes.  The witness on the stand looks nervous but doesn’t crack.

But, then, things get interesting.  How do you know when that lawyer’s going to get the witness to confess?  I’ll tell you how. You watch her gesture with her glasses.

Yes, when she places one finger on the top of her glasses’ lens and, with a supportive thumb underneath, tips her designer frame down to peer out over the top while demanding, “Isn’t that true?”  This is when she’s going to get the answers she wants.

You see, a gesture that includes one’s glasses is a gesture that matters.  And if you have a hard time being taken seriously, I’d recommend you get some glasses.

Picture college professor Indiana Jones teaching his students archeology.  Probably wearing reading specs, he would read aloud and then move his round-shaped lenses below his sight line to make sure his class was following a long.  I dare you to name me a person who questioned the credibility of Dr. Jones.

In my opinion, worthwhile gesturing practically requires glasses.  After all, what statement doesn’t seem a little bit more poignant if it requires someone to move their eyeglasses?  Adjusting your fashion frame to peer out over top is a way of non-verbally saying, I’m going to make sure that there is nothing stopping you from understanding the gravity of what’s going on here.

My favorite glasses gesture is the little “pop up/pop back down” move I do with my favorite pair of fashion sunglasses when met with some surprising news. Simply saying, “Are you serious?” would not have nearly the same impact.  But, using the glasses gesture, tilting and peering out overtop a fantastic pair of sunglasses, is what gives the words some weight.

Then there is the ultimate, let-me-show-you-how-serious-I-am gesture: the glasses yank-off.  There are few more expressive things you can do with any accessory than yanking your glasses from your face in disgust or disbelief. Slamming them down on the table, or throwing them across the room adds extra emphasis, but is not recommended by your optician!

So if you want to be taken more seriously, head over to your nearest America’s Best then you can start practicing your glasses gestures!
