Protecting Your Eyes From the Sun

Protecting Your Eyes from the Sun

Summertime is just around the corner. It’s the time of year to lay-out, enjoy the rays and most importantly give your eyes the protection from harmful UV rays that they need. But before you get out having fun in the sun this summer, you may want to take a moment to read this blog post on…

How to Best Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

Sunglasses

It’s not going to come as any surprise to you that you need a good pair of sunglasses to block and protect your eyes against harmful UV rays. Buy a pair of sunglasses you love, that way you’re more motivated to wear them wherever you go. At America’s Best, we carry brands like Ray-Ban® and Vogue™ so you can find designer looks that’ll offer the protection you need and the look you’ll love.

Sunglasses That Protect

Luckily, oversized sunglasses are all the rage these days – but not only are they fashionable; they’re also a big part in protecting your eyes from the sun. Try to find a pair that covers you from temple to temple, to help keep UV rays from entering through the side.

Protection on Top of Your Protection

Invest in a wide brimmed hat to wear along with your sunglasses while you’re lounging poolside or are out at the beach. A hat will not only provide extra protection to your eyes, but also the areas around your eyes since UV damage can affect the skin around your eyes as well.

Cloudy Still Comes With a UV Threat

If you look out and it’s cloudy, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to protect your eyes. Cloudy skies don’t stop UV rays from damaging your eyes, and this isn’t just confined to warm seasons, this is true all year around. So, if you’re out under the sky, protect your eyes with a great pair of fashionable sunglasses.

Highest UV Protection

When you are shopping for your summertime sunglasses, try and get the highest percent of UV blockage possible. Ideally, you want to keep it above 75% and as close to 100% as possible.

Never Make Eye Contact

With the sun, that is. Looking directly into the sun can cause retina damage from solar radiation.

Avoidance is Key

If possible, try not to go out during peak times. U.V rays have the strongest exposure between 10AM and 2PM, so if you can avoid going out between those times, it’s not just better for your eyes, it’s better for your health.

Don’t let these tips keep you from having a good time. Take a moment and prepare with a lot of sunscreen, a great pair of UV blocking sunglasses and a nice fashionable hat, and get out there and enjoy the cool breeze and warm temperatures.
