Instant 20/20?

I was flipping through the channels the other day and saw a commercial for an innovative product that would instantly give you eyeglasses in any prescription you needed.  Amazing and so convenient, right?

Not exactly!

I decided to visit the product’s web page and was really relieved to see all the warnings and disclaimers on their page.  For example, you can’t drive with these adjustable glasses and the page advises that you actually go to an optometrist and find out your real prescription.  At least they got that part right.

So is there danger if using glasses that you can just play with until you can see well out of them.  Emphatically, yes!  You may be okay with using them for a few minutes, one time, to help your read or see something up close.  But your eye glass prescription is not that simplistic. And, sometimes a lens –even one that you can see clearly out of –isn’t necessarily the best strength for your eyes.

Not to mention the fact if you have astigmatism or other specialized vision problems a one size fits all solution like a pair of adjustable glasses may make things a little clearer when you look straight forward, but may not help you focus well on distant objects or help you see things peripherally.

One of the biggest dangers of looking through glasses that are in a prescription not diagnosed by your optometrist:  headaches.  In fact, in addition to eye fatigue, dry eye, or eye strain, if you spend a lot of time staring through lenses that are not right for you, you could experience intense headaches as a sign that something is just not right!  Your brain knows when it’s not receiving the proper help and signals pain for your body to stop and change what it’s doing!

Just like drug store or department store glasses that are pre-made in a certain prescription, these adjustable glasses are just as bad and potentially damaging for your eyes.  If you are having vision problems of any kind, seeing clearly at night, problems while driving, problems focusing while reading or sewing or eye fatigue from staring at a screen too long…don’t delay or try to find quick fixes like adjustable lens glasses.  Just schedule a full eye exam.  If you do have vision problems, you won’t regret taking just a little bit of time to get a pair of glasses that can make your whole world a little brighter and clearer, no adjustment necessary!
