How do they make lenses so clear and sharp?

Digital lenses are often referred to as “free-form” lenses. This name comes from the manufacturing process that sets these lenses apart from their traditional counterparts. We use Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology combined with computer-controlled manufacturing equipment to create the America’s Best Digital lenses. When creating digital lenses, precision design and machinery adjust surface curves, taking into account all lens variables. This process differs from the continuous curve created on the back surface of the lens during traditional lens creation.

When creating traditional (non-Digital) lenses, a single continuous curve across the back surface of the lens gives you acceptable visual quality. This technique is great when you look through the center of the lens. Unfortunately, changing lens thicknesses, the design and size of the frame can often result in visual distortions, especially at the edge of the lens.

The advanced process in Digital lens manufacturing reduces distortion in the lenses, often referred to as “aberration.” Since a wearer’s eyeglass prescription, lens material, frame size, shape and facial measurements are taken into account, no two Digital lenses are the same. At America’s Best, we offer a full family of digital lenses in a variety of prices!

You can most easily see the benefit of Digital lens designs when wearing Digital progressive lenses. Traditional progressive designs create areas of distortion that can reduce a wearer’s reading or immediate area of sight. It can also create significant areas of distortion at the edge of the lens. Digital progressives can virtually eliminate this distortion.
