Want to Be Taken More Seriously? Try Some Glasses!

If you’ve seen the hit movie Legally Blonde (2001), you can probably still picture Elle Woods showing up at her first day of law school with her adorable eyeglass frames on. To illustrate my college days, this image wouldn’t be that far off (short of the fact that I’m no Reese Witherspoon and refuse to carry any animal, let alone a tiny hairless dog, in my bag).

For me, wearing my glasses to college classes seemed only natural. At the time, I did need them for reading things up close, so they helped me if called upon to read something during class. But that’s not why I wore them.

I have a confession to make: I wore glasses to class just to make people think I was smarter.

I looked smarter wearing my fashion eyeglasses to my classes, and I knew it. So, while my glasses helped me look the part of a student, they also helped me feel a little smarter! This was a big help at test time especially, when you need a bit of a confidence boost.

Studies have shown that people perceive those who wear glasses to be smarter than those who don’t.

Other studies show that women and men wearing stylish eyeglasses are rated as more trustworthy and even more honest than those who don’t. If you watch many high profile trials on TV, you’ll often see a defendant leaving his or her contact lenses at home and wearing glasses instead. Let me assure you that this isn’t because the prison didn’t have any saline solution. This is so the person on the hook for whatever crime will appear to the judge and jury as a more credible witness in their own case.
