Can Your Eyes Get Sunburned?

We know the sun can wreak havoc on our skin and that allowing your skinned to suffer a burn is not a good idea. But, did you know that your eyes could also get sunburned?

I had no idea until recently that this was even possible!

When your eyes are open and exposed to the sun for too long, the tissue of your eyes found on your cornea can get burned in just the same manner as your skin. What often happens is your eyes will be red and sore and your vision can be blurred. One popular television newsman, Anderson Cooper, suffered sunburned eyeballs back in 2012 and told his viewers that he woke up in the middle of the night feeling like his eyes were on fire.

The only treatment for sunburned eyes is rest. Often within a day or two the symptoms will go away and the eyes will begin to heal themselves. Optometrists refer to the condition as keratitis and can recommend lubricating drops to help soothe your eyes and aid in your recovery should this happen to you.

Another thing optometrists want you to be aware of: there’s no seasonal limit to sunburned eyes. In fact, though it may seem like this would happen more in the summer, in reality you can burn your eyes any time of the year. Skiers must especially be aware of what the sun is doing to their eyes if they try to hit the bright and sunny slopes (with the light reflecting off of all that white snow) without appropriate eyewear.

Getting sunburned eyes isn’t likely to cause full blindness. But, the long-term impact of exposing your eyes to the sun without protection undoubtedly causes more serious vision problems. Eye problems like macular degeneration cataracts are exacerbated by prolonged sun exposure and frequent sunburns.
