Buying glasses online seems okay. All you need is a current prescription and an idea of what frame you want, and with a few cursor clicks and a credit card, you can order your glasses. Voila! But is this really a good way to get new specs?
According to a study by the Journal of the American Optometric Association, the answer is no! Glasses you buy online consistently fail to meet acceptable safety standards and fail prescription specifications as well. The study also found that in many cases the glasses are shipped with features that the person who ordered didn’t know they had and, most likely, didn’t want.
A panel of researchers and eyewear industry experts conducted the study that found that more than twenty percent (20%) of the glasses they looked at were not delivered as ordered, with certain features either not included or added.
More than twenty-five percent of the completed eyeglasses they looked at were, what is referred to as, “out of tolerance.” In other words — the prescription wasn’t put into the lenses correctly.
Another quarter of these glasses surveyed had one or both of the lenses fail to meet a requirement of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for impact-resistance.
Out of the more than 300 lenses studied for this research report, more than half had something wrong with them. The AOA (American Optometric Association) compared this to the two percent (2%) of all lenses that are reported to have problems when dispensed through a reputable optical dispensary.
